Safety Devices with the RNLI

Nick Marks, former LOM of Lyme’s RNLI, and current Safety Officer, gave an excellent presentation to club members last night, helped by his team. They were welcomed by the Commodore.

A range of safety equipment which sailors use was covered, from life jackets, buoyancy aids, flotation aids, location beacons for persons and boats, signalling, VHF radios, mobile phones and information sheets to flares and their use. The range of suitability of communication devices was discussed. Kayaking and SUPs safety advice was given. Demonstrations of inflating life jackets made us jump, and checking their condition led on to members checking their own and having them checked. An LED flare was shown. Disposal of out of date flares seems to be limited to return to suppliers or to RNLI Poole.

A most informative and useful session for new and experienced cruisers, dinghy sailors and other water sports users was appreciated by those attending. Nick’s team has given presentations at local sailing clubs. The Commodore thanked Nick and his team for the evening.
Note: Having completed their PBI course two years ago, Dave Law and Ray Cackett took advice from their trainer and have updated the equipment on the Club Ribs. They check continue to check regularly.
