It was a very successful and enjoyable Regatta all round, on the water, socially and weather-wise. Maybe a bit more wind would have been easier on the race team! The club was busy with a popular BBQ on Saturday evening for 73, the bar did good trade as did Sunday late lunches. We welcomed 4 visiting competitors including Mike and Simon who sailed over from Weymouth.
Racing took place in lighter and more variable NE winds on Saturday, but after a short postponement, the SW breeze filled in nicely on Sunday. Race Officer Dave Guthrie and his team set a trapezoid course and the series of 3 races plus the Championship of the Day were all completed. Handicap classes were separate for dinghies and cruisers, turnouts were 22 and 4 respectively, with a visiting Hunter Duette and two ILCAs, not to forget Ed’s crew Bruno. Seven of the dinghies were helmed by U18s, competing closely with the adults.
Well up after the first day, Tom (5, 1) was second to Guy (1,3) with fellow youth ILCA6 sailor Alex (7,2) in fourth place separated by the Tylers in third (3,5). Dave Stubbs followed in fifth (10, 4) having managed to capsize four times in the first race and once in the second when he caught the boom in his buoyancy aid coming out of the tack, much to the amusement of his son Ed (9,15). Oliver Rawlings, the youngest helm finished both races in his Topper. Tim and Sarah (8,9,1) came through to take the third race after a general recall on Sunday morning as the fleet crowded the port end of the start line. They ended the series in fifth place, Guy (1,3,3,) winning from the Tylers in second and the two ILCAs in third (Tom) and Alex in fourth. Rob and Sharyn took first for the cruisers.
With the tides making it possible, four cruisers took part in the Championship of the Day, joining thirteen dinghies. Guy won that race, closely beating Ed and Bruno by seven seconds on corrected time. Simon was 8 seconds behind Ed, with Tim and Sarah following only 9 seconds later, and Allan and Chrissy 4 seconds after them. A very close run race, in good conditions. Alex come just in front of Tom, reversing their positions for the first time. Rob and Sharyn led the other three cruisers, 14th on handicap.
Sailing Secretary (Racing), Allan Tyler, led the prize giving by welcoming the sailors and thanking the Race Officer and club teams. Allan announced the winners while Dave handed the prizes. Guy thanked the Race team on behalf of the competitors.
