Youth Regatta Races – Ideal conditions!

Disappointed by lack of wind on 12th, we were greeted with what Race Officer Jerry Rook described as ‘perfect conditions for our young sailors’ on Saturday 19th July. ‘It was a good turnout of 33 competitors in a steady SW wind of about 7-10 knots with added sunshine,’ Jerry commented.
The range of classes from Optimists to ILCAs, with Picos and Fusions, gave opportunity for all our youth sailors to join in the two races. The Race group had a longer windward leg, the others a smaller inner triangle. The Oppie beginners sailed for the first time in a good breeze. Coaching was allowed to help the less experienced round the course, but competition among the ILCAs, who often join in club racing, was keen and run without assistance. A team of qualified adult volunteers who run youth training sessions provided race management and safety cover on the water and ashore. With them were the older youth sailors who take key roles in teaching sailing. Saturday lunch by Jo was followed by the prizegiving. Chris Turner of Ovington Boats sponsored the prizes – all our young sailors were rewarded for ‘having a go’. The winners also received engraved ‘Youth Prizewinner’ glasses. Jerry thanked his team and Chris, the sailors and their parents. He and Pauline were thanked and presented with club engraved glasses. A rewarding event for all involved!
