We ended the season on a high, with a sail in ideal conditions. Too much wind or too little on Tuesdays since April, has made the group used to adjusting on the day – dinghies, focus and partners. But to end the 14th session with a good breeze and a chance for sailing ILCAs, Fusion2s, Fusions and Picos independently, was ideal. Noah had Harry trapezing and using a spinnaker for the first time. Our DIs and assistants supported and had more Rib driving practice, with Jim and Ray keeping an eye overall. Our first-years all came through the more challenging sessions with increased confidence which showed in their smiles. Gusty winds, but manageable waves, all showed what they’d achieved. The evening finished with cakes and a debrief from Jim. He commended all the young sailors on their progress this year, handing them a personal record listing the RYA statements at Levels 1 – 4. Thanks and appreciation for the leaders and team was followed by plans for next steps and provisional Returner group places for 2025 at signing out. A further 10 Returners reached competence to be offered places with the Saturday Skills youth group which continues in September. Another U18 ILCA sailor has been accepted into the club Race Coaching Group. ‘It’s the enthusiasm of our group and their keenness to learn to sail and to help each other that has been rewarding. Our older youth sailors have been great, flexible and reliable,’ said Sally. ‘This year has been the best group I can recall, ‘ Jim told them. We look forward to next year, offers of places will be sent out in February when Renewals of Memberships are in.
