Conditions on Tuesday 8 June were ideal for all three Tuesday groups, a steady light breeze and gently rolling waves, plus a good depth of water in the harbour. The tide was more noticeable at the windward mark for Jack’s group, laid by Jeremy and Dave on PJ, but not strong enough to confuse Jim’s beginners. Paul and Ray supported Jim in a second Rib as one newcomer joined this week. The Ints in their Picos and the E/H team ( 2x club 420s, 2 Lasers, 1 Pico) had enough waves to make down wind legs interesting and a steady breeze to help with up wind tacking. Jack concentrated on roll tacking, tactics and mark rounding by coaching individuals, calling them alongside the Rib. The 420s were helmed by those who had sailed them previously with Jerry’s Race group, crewed by two Tuesday youths. Dave Beer was able to take photos from PJ, and I was delighted to be ferried out by Tim to have a good look at all our youth sailors and snap a few. What great progress our beginners have made, Issy is a competent sailor who demonstrates for Jack in a Pico, enjoying a change from her SW Zone squad in her Topper, all the Ints showed close sailing skills and mark rounding improvement. Meanwhile, our ILCAs had their coach, Graham, to themselves.
‘The beginners were concentrating on reaching between two buoys and steering a straight course. Ollie and Henry did well to sail out of the harbour independently, and several of them managed to sail most of the way back at the end of the session,’ said Jim.

Jack said: ‘We set both groups off on a triangular course. I stopped each sailor and gave them points to work on. With the help of Issy, we demonstrated and talked through how to do roll tacks, then watched each one have a go. ‘Next was tactics and mark rounding, hampered a bit by the tide, with individuals helped. ‘Good progress was made by everyone, a rewarding session.’
