Keen Race Group sailors launch on 12 Dec 2020 for a session with Jerry and Dave
The sailing club has a long tradition of youth training and currently has a vibrant youth section working with young sailors at all stages, from beginners to those enjoying competitive racing. Previous youth members have gone on to be international champions, some to make sailing their career or business. Family membership and dinghy ownership are also encouraged, for those aiming to race or to take up the sport as a leisure activity. Training sessions are run on Saturdays and Tuesday evenings for 10 – 17 year olds, led by RYA certified Instructors or coaches backed by teams of experienced sailors and club organisers. Safeguarding briefings and Code of Conduct information are given at the start of each season. Sessions are run according to RYA guidelines. There is a Youth Regatta and a race for youth in the Club Regatta as well as a course enabling youth members to take part in Bart’s Bash – the charity race in aid of the Andrew Simpson Foundation. Application for training places is made annually at membership Renewals time, then provisional offers are made according to our resources available and to the prevailing Government, RYA, Club and local harbour requirements. There is currently no charge in addition to club membership. At present, we run a Race Group and an Intermediates Group on Saturdays, a Beginners and Improvers group on Tuesday evenings. A new Optimist group is being planned for 2021. The Youth section uses dinghies belonging to LRSS under an agreement with the Club, as well as club and member owned boats.

Saturday Race Group

For those who have good sailing skills and are keen to progress to racing. This Group of up to 12 runs throughout the year whenever conditions permit. Lasers and double-handers are used, with Picos in stronger winds. Extra coaching sessions are sometimes arranged. Taking part in club organised racing is encouraged.

Saturday Intermediates Group

Run in two parts, one for those ‘independent sailors’ who aim to qualify for the Race group, the other for those seeking to improve their skills as leisure sailors. Session numbers are limited to 6.

Tuesday evenings

Tuesday training is a larger group made up of Beginners, Improvers and more experienced youth members who return to assist the adult team, while having the opportunity for further time on the water for their own supervised and coached sailing. Beginners are welcomed each season, the courses run from Easter to mid-July and progression to sailing independently of assistance is the aim although many stay with the group for 3 years or more. Basic experience towards PB2 is given when resources allow, also DofE Bronze mentoring and similar certification. RYA guidelines are followed, certification is not given.
